Coach Miknis
As many people have heard, a Pennfield legend, Mr. Chuck Miknis, passed away just over a week ago. Mr. Miknis coached many sports including football, basketball, baseball, and softball. He coached at Pennfield for 40 years and in that time became the all time winningest basketball coach in school history. While he was here at Pennfield he made many friendships. Someone who was especially close with him was Mr. Grimes.
“I first met Mr. Miknis in 1988 when he coached my younger brother in his early years, but would get to know him really well when I came back to coach and teach at Pennfield.”
Mr. Grimes became his J.V. coach and assistant for 13 years. They also worked together as assistants for the football staff for around 20 years. Mr. Grimes chose the words “original” and “genuine” to describe Coach Miknis’s personality. Mr. Grimes also said, “He could relate with anyone. He was also very insightful into predicting how things would turn out. He was also a huge personality with his quick wit and humor as anyone will tell you.” Coach Grimes said that some of the things that he will miss most about Coach Miknis are scouting trips, going to games together, and random talks on the phone.
Another person that got close to Coach Miknis more towards the end of his career is Miss Collins. Miss Collins first met Coach Miknis six years ago when she first started teaching and coaching at Pennfield.
When asked how she would describe his personality, she responded with “He was very laid back and relaxed, but had high expectations. You always knew Miknis would stick in your corner, but tell you the truth.”

Teacher of the Month
The Teacher of the Month award of January goes to science teacher, Mr. Piotrowski. Mr. Piotrowski isn’t originally from Battle Creek. He grew up in Redford, Michigan, which is west of Detroit.
“Redford is not a town but a charter township of Detroit, much in the same way that Pennfield is charter township of Battle Creek, which is kind of cool.” He tells us.
Mr. Piotrowski went to a Catholic school that had a body of 200 students, Bishop Borgess High School. After graduating from Bishop Borgess High School, he went to Michigan State University and earned his degrees in Geology and Education.
Mr. Piotrowski didn’t start teaching right away.
“I worked as a geologist for 10 years before becoming a teacher. My wife of 33 years, Jean Ann, a retired media specialist who taught at Godwin, worked in Grand Rapids, but we settled in Hastings so that I would have job opportunities in multiple cities nearby.”
Once Mr. and Mrs. Piotrowski settled they were ready for a family.
”We have a daughter, Aura, who’s an 11th grader that enjoys cross country, choir, and participating in theatrical productions. We also have goats, chickens, fish, a bird, a horse, and a snake.”
In 2001 Mr.Piotrowski started teaching at Pennfield, which was the first time he’s ever taught full time. When he first arrived he taught chemistry and physics.
Mr. Piotrowski loves all his 19 years of working at Pennfield High School.
“High school is a very memorable time for students– not always a fond time, but memorable; a stressful bumper car ride of friendships, emotions, insecurities, learning and self- discovery. I love coming in everyday to be a part of collective energy– to listen, guide and share what I have learned when I can.”
Mr. Piotrowski always loves to have a fun time with his students that make the best memories.
“A few of my favorite memories from this year are getting rid of Molly MacKenzie’s hiccups by scaring her with the false news that a project was due at the end of class and solving puzzles with Brooklynne Byers during lunch.”
Mr.Piotrowski is very honored that he won this award.
“It is great to win stuff, but I am particularly honored that students took time to submit kind words on my behalf. I was told that I was empathetic to students and the issues they deal with– but at the same time hold them accountable for their learning in class. I also try to make class fun by being enthusiastic, relatable, and encouraging.”
Mr. Piotrowski wanted to give a little advice to students and teachers by saying,
“When you feel overwhelmed, sleep will probably help. Reading articles to procrastinate is fine; but it is probably time to get back to work. Don’t take yourself too seriously, and try to cut your fellow students some slack. They are confused, uncertain people that are trying to find their way– just as you are.”
If you’re struggling with anything school or home related don’t be afraid to talk to Mr. Piotrowski. He’s a great listener and a great teacher.

Mrs. O'Dowd
35 years before Mrs. O’Dowd started working at PHS, she prayed she would get a job, then a lady called her the SAME day she prayed and said that there was a job opening at Pennfield. She ended up getting the job.
Mrs. O’Dowd said, “The thing that has never changed is the dedication of Pennfield teachers and the love they have for their students.” She stated, “The thing that has changed the most at the school is that kids are struggling more with social media and their respect has gone down. Kids need to be more respectful to authority figures.” Mrs. O’Dowd’s three rules in her class are be kind, be respectful and be honest. The only thing she would change about school is taking Algebra 2 out for kids who do not need it for their future career and put in vocational classes because there are a lot of jobs available for skilled trades. Some other staff members that have been here for a long time have said positive things about Mrs. O’Dowd. Mr. Duckham said, “She is a believer in the Lord and if you pray for things good things will happen. She taught me that.” Mr. Klepac and Mrs. Funk told us that Mrs. O’Dowd goes above and beyond for all of her students and she is very dedicated and caring to all the students. Mrs. Fox told us that “Mrs. O’Dowd not only cares for the students' education but also about feeding and clothing them too, she takes care of all of the students and teachers.” Mrs. O’Dowd has built strong relationships with her co-workers. Over the summer, Mrs. Galbraith painted her parking spot, as well as one for Mrs. O’Dowd. This lead to Mrs. O’Dowd taking pride in both parking spots. So when a staff member mistakenly parked in Mrs. Galbraith’s spot, Mrs. O’Dowd was quick to correct them. Mrs. O’Dowd is a nice, caring, and loving person, make sure to say hi to her the next time you see her. -- Kaitlynn Caswell Alissa Stamper ‘22 (2/19/20) |
Mr. Forton's Foxy Cut
|
Every year at Pennfield High School we have a Winter Carnival Assembly that’s filled with many fun events that make the audience laugh. This year Mr. Forton decided to spice it up with an idea he came up with himself just because he wanted to raise money. The staff and each class had to raise money and whoever raised the most cash got to pick Mr. Forton's new hairstyle. The staff ended up winning and had to decide between a buzzcut, mullet, or the fox tail. The staff all voted and ended with Mr. Forton having to get the Fox Tail cut. People at Pennfield knew about the reason behind Mr. Fortons fresh cut but nobody outside of the school did.
Mr. Forton tells us, “This lady at Meijer looked at me and was like “wow” and was really disgusted with my hair. I really didn’t care though because this haircut raised $138 and this was a fun activity that I’d do again next year.” The students and staff both found Mr. Forton’s hair hilarious and thought it was a very fun idea to add into the assembly. It just makes next year even more exciting to know what’s going to be his next fresh cut. -- Hannah Davis ‘21, Izzy Dingman ‘22, Kailee Overby ‘20 (1/4/20) |
Teacher of the Month
Teacher of the Month for December goes to Math Teacher, Mrs. Dollaway. Mrs. Dollaway went to school at Battle Creek Central and MSC right here in town. After graduating High School she went to college at KCC, then Western Michigan University and earned her Masters from Concordia University. She was inspired by teaching from her grandfather and her aunt which were a professor and a math teacher.
“They inspired me to be a teacher because they loved their jobs and that’s what I’ve always wanted to do because of them.” During the summer she enjoys, “Anything and everything I can with friends and family because the school year can get really busy. And of course hours of sporting events mostly baseball but some football to watch my boys.” Lastly she wanted to add that, “I am very grateful for all of the kind words that students have shared about me but also other teachers each month. It is a highlight each month.” Make sure you congratulate Mrs. Dollaway on her recognition and watch the video of her getting surprised. -- Kailee Overby ’20 (12/12/19) |

Teacher Spotlight
Our featured teacher this week is Mr. Boyd. Mr. Boyd teaches World History/Geography and has been teaching at Pennfield since 1999. He says,
“I didn’t choose to work at Pennfield; Pennfield chose me.”
His favorite part of his job is making connections with students that last a lifetime.
“It’s more than just seeing them at school, it’s seeing them outside of where I normally do that matters. Whether running into them at the grocery store, a football game, or even a barber shop, it’s nice to have those connections to students so they enjoy coming to class.”
Mr. Boyd enjoys teaching history, mostly because he enjoys it more than other subjects. He is one of the best history teachers here at the High School and continues to be one of the student’s favorites! Keep it up Mr. Boyd!

Mrs. Blyveis Spotlight
You may have seen Mrs. Blyveis around school, she is a key member of the PHS staff. She is a Special Education teacher here at PHS. She also loves to dress in bright and happy colors everyday. ”I’m a happy person, I like to wear happy clothes as well!” Mrs. Blyveis informed the Emerald. While she loves to dress in her unique way, she can’t take all the credit, her 12 year old daughter keeps her looking great with some constructive criticism.
While visiting Mrs. Blyveis, we had the chance to get to know her a little better. She had a few things to share with us. "Outside of school I enjoy traveling to other states. I have family in California and Colorado, so I always like seeing them. My favorite place to travel since I moved from there 2 years ago is Nevada. I love to play BINGO. It is a very serious game. Us old people, play it as a sport. It gets pretty intense sometimes. I enjoy going to the movies (never for Horror flicks!) Most importantly, when I go, I eat buttered popcorn with M&M's. I enjoy traveling with my family to different states for my kids wrestling tournaments, but I don't like wrestling. It is a very difficult and committed sport. My worries are that Benny, my son (14) or Hannah, my daughter (12) are going to get hurt. I am not too fond of seeing arms, legs, shoulders and necks getting twisted backwards, bent, pulled, stretched and upside down, it's not for the faint of heart and there's always a lot of bloody noses. I enjoy eating at different restaurants and all types of foods; Greek, Persian, Indian, Mexican, Italian and American. I love sushi and if I could afford it, I would eat it everyday. I enjoy doing arts and crafts, but I am horrible at it. Therefore, I buy things like paint by number for adults. My newest hobby is painting the rocks in my back yard with glow in the dark paint. My favorite favorite thing to do other than sleep with my dogs Ninja and Sparky all day is, I could sit outside and watch the animals for hours. In California and Nevada, we didn't have all these deer and squirrels. I love watching them and the geese that cross in front of you when your driving or up in the sky in their V formations and the cardinals and blue-jays are amazing. I get really excited about these things. In fact, there was a chipmunk outside of my all of September and October. I named him Alvin and he would come out during 4th and 6th period. Until of course Ms. Collins threatened to bring Brody by to eat him. I haven't seen Alvin in over a month, so I think Ms. Collins has some explaining to do! |
Finally, expressing myself. Well, I am a pretty happy person. I have always felt "life is what you make it." We all go through rough patches and have our ups and downs. I say what I want, act like I want and obviously wear what I want. When I was younger, probably High School age, I cared so much about what others thought of me, or did they like me? Was I cool enough? Did I wear the right clothes? Did I have the most expensive car? Was I popular? It was incredibly exhausting and I realized how superficial I must have been. In more recent years, I have come to learn those kind of questions are not what is important. Talking to people, caring for people, being respectful to people, admitting you don't know everything, admitting you make mistakes, being a good person is what is important. People feel good when they smile. When people smile, they are happy. I like to surround myself with happy people. I am always wearing bright colors because I think of bright as in a rainbow or something happy. It's okay to be different. I feel unique. If someone is at the mall and they see a pair of shoes or a shirt and it reminds them of me, I thinks that's awesome. I don't need to be like everyone, I am my own individual."

Teacher of the Month
The Teacher of the Month award of November goes to English teacher, Mr. Podolan. Mr. Podolan went to Richmond High School which is on the East side of the state. After graduating from High School he went to the University of Michigan and earned a degree in Psychology, then he transferred over to Central Michigan University to work on his PHD in Clinical Psychology. After a few years he realized he wanted to teach instead so he went back to school to get his teaching certificate. This past Summer he finished his Masters Degree in Administration. Mr. Podolan started teaching at Ypsilanti New Tech High School which is near Ann Arbor then switched to the Pennfield School District. He now has been teaching English for 4 years now here at Pennfield High School. Mr. Podolan has a wife here at Pennfield, Mrs. Podolan who teaches Freshman and Senior English.
He tells us, “It feels great that my wife teaches at the same school as me. We met while working at Ypsilanti Tech, and we even taught in the same classroom at one point.” Mr. and Mrs. Podolan had their first baby in May. Her name is Lois and she just turned 6 months old. She’s always rolling over and the happiest baby he’s seen. Mr. Podolan’s favorite memory at Pennfield High School was his first year coaching football. He was new which made it an exciting experience for him. His favorite thing that happened this year was winning the teacher of the month and “The You Rock” award in the same month. |
Mr. Podolan told us, “Winning the Teacher of the Month award was a great honor and a big surprise. It motivates me to do the best I can while teaching.”
Stop by his room sometime and congratulate Mr. Podolan on his award. Check out this video to see the student’s surprise him. -- Hannah Davis ‘21, Izzy Dingman ‘22 (11/22/19) |
Brody James Spotlight
|
You may have seen Brody around school, but maybe you don’t know his story. Brody is Ms. Collins’s dog which she has been bringing to school since he was 8 weeks old. Brody is certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and American Kennel Club as a Canine Good Citizen. When Brody is not being adored at school, he likes going on hikes, running, playing soccer and fetch, swimming or hanging out with his other dog friends. I think it is safe to say that it brightens everyone’s day to see him in the halls. So next time you see Brody and Ms. Collins make sure to say hello!

Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Funk
Mrs. Funk is one of our high school secretaries at Pennfield High School. The biggest part of Mrs. Funk’s job is that she works with the school finances along with many other duties. Mrs. Funk wanted to be a secretary so she would be on the same schedule as her kids and have summers off for family time. Mrs. Funk has three children, two boys and one girl. She said the hardest part of her job is seeing students battle hardships in their personal lives. Mrs. Funk said the best part of her job is seeing students come into their own through the years. She says she enjoys working at Pennfield because it has small school vibes and everyone is so close. Next time you step into the main office make sure to say hello to Mrs. Funk!

Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Fox
Mrs. Fox is one of our building secretaries/librarians at PHS. Mrs. Fox has 3 boys, along with 2 daughter-in-laws. She works in the main office as a secretary in the mornings and she works in the library in the afternoon as a librarian. She started working at Pennfield because her kids weren’t home so she got bored. She started off as a substitute teacher for 20 years before she became a librarian and a secretary. Her favorite seasons are summer and fall, she couldn’t pick which one she likes best. Mrs. Fox’s favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because she gets to spend time with her family. The only time she’s been outside of the country is when she went to the Bahamas on a senior trip. The reason she works at Pennfield is because she loves working with kids and loves seeing the excuses they come up with when they are caught in the act. Be sure to greet Mrs. Fox the next time you come in tardy!

New Electives
We have new classes available to Pennfield High School! These classes were added to offer more electives. One of the new classes is speech and debate, which is taught by Mr. Podolan. Mr. Podolan’s speech and debate class mainly focuses on current events and discussing the topics within the class. Sometimes the students are able to choose the topics that are important and interesting about the current events and debate on those events. During class the students participate and complete assignments whether it be researching, writing, debating, giving speeches, giving feedback to each other, etc. There is no debating outside of school, it is all done inside the classroom. So far the students seem to be having a good time and enjoying the class. Luckily, the speech and debate class is available to students of all grade levels.
The other new class is creative writing which is taught by Ms. Hendryx. This class covers all types of writing such as poetry, short stories, journal entries, etc. Later on the students will be writing to a pen pal in Norway. For the class this year, there is not a set curriculum, so they are making it up as they go. However, on a daily basis, students are given writing prompts and then the students are asked to complete the story. The students also have creative blogs that they post something new about their personal lives, everyday. Students, so far, are seeming to like the class, but would prefer a smaller class. Luckily, students of all grades are welcome to take this class. With these new and available classes, we are hoping you will expand your horizons and try them out!

Bobby Holley Fundraiser
Bobby Holley is a substitute teacher here at PHS. He runs an anti-bullying t-shirt campaign to raise awareness of bullying in our community. Bobby Holley shared that he has had a few students in his life come up to him and tell him they have been bullied. He talks to them about it and asks them questions to help make sure it gets taken care of. Bobby Holley is trying to raise $50,000 to purchase 10,000 t-shirts. Students K-12 can get a free t-shirt from him, or they can write to “The Church Of Living Water” to get one. Bobby Holley is an ally for people who have been or are being bullied. He’s already given out 1,500 t-Shirts for free to students in Battle Creek. Bobby Holley believes, “We have to do all that we can by working together to help stop bullying in and out of schools.” Donations are needed to keep this anti-bullying t-shirt campaign alive, so go check out the Go Fund Me page below.
